In all of my art classes I try to establish a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. I know that it can be difficult to paint in front of other people, whether you are a beginner or an experienced painter so that I work at helping you lose your fear and gain confidence. Although there is structure to the classes, which usually begin with a brief lesson and demo, I tend to let you feel your way, with guidance. My focus is always on seeing – getting rid of our preconceived ideas about what something looks like – so that we can see what is actually there in form, line and colour.
Everyone can learn to paint as evidenced by the amazing work my students have produced. We have organized a number of exhibitions by both beginners and advanced groups in Canoa and Bahia, improvising gallery space, whether at a local restaurant or hostel or at the university in Bahia. These have always been successful in every way and a boost to our local cultural scene. |
Sip and Paint
I held the first Sip and Paint session in May of 2017, thinking to meet every few weeks, alternating the medium between acrylic and watercolour. The classes have been so well- received that I now hold Sip and Paint twice a week. I researched this kind of art get-together and found that it is standard for all students to paint the same image. Knowing how intimidating it can be to compare your work to that of your neighbour I have changed it around so that each person chooses an image to paint. This way you are painting something that appeals to you and matches your skill level. As well, you can choose to work in watercolour or acrylic. I supply images or you can bring your own. All materials are supplied. The results have been incredible.
Come and join us Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, from 2:30 to 4:30, at my house near Briceño. Bring your beverage of choice. At the bottom of the page are testimonials from students. Check my blog page on this site to find out about current and upcoming courses. Works shown: Upper left, Canoe, watercolour and acrylic by Tim Blackmore; Lower left, Sea Urchins, watercolour by Deb McKeller; Below, Crystal Cove, watercolour by Don Newell; Lower right, Rose, watercolour bby Micky Pedersen; Upper right, Palm Tree, acrylic by Laurel Blackmore. |
If you are interested in a specific painting skill, medium or technique, or want to venture into collage, my favourite art form, then consider one of my weekend workshops.
Workshops are usually Fridays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an hour for lunch. Themes include Collage and Assemblage using found materials; Painting on beach wood in acrylic; Watercolour Clouds and Sea; Watercolour vs. Acrylic - Painting the Sea. Please see my Blog Page for current workshops or contact me for more information. |
Kathy Bolger:
“Moya Foley is an excellent teacher. She is patient and understanding of new students’ feelings. I had so much fun that when I got home I bought some art supplies and started looking for another picture to paint”. |
Suzanne Butson:
“I’ve learned to paint what I actually see, rather than what I expect to see. Now I just paint without any qualms and certainly no fear. It is a nurturing, calm environment.” |
Andrew Taylor: “Moya has that unique quality of a teacher who is really skilled in her art, she’s a gentle guide and often points out something quite simple, and yet it’s just what you need at that moment.”

Maartje Rienks: Thank you so much for teaching 3 generations of girls… we all enjoyed it so much. The girls were so impressed with their own work, something that always happens to me as well… you are the kind of teacher that brings the best out of the students. Thank you!
