There is something uniquely appealing about the tenderness and vulnerability of a young child who is not yet aware of being observed. When I first met my brother's grandson, Kaidan, in 2007 it was fall in Ontario. We took Kaidan to a farm to choose his own pumpkin for Halloween, and he was awed by the whole adventure. More recently in 2016 I met his cousin, Kennedy, and it was love at first sight. Both of them had an innocence and sense of wonder that enchants me and begs to be painted. With more recent commissions I have discovered that innocence, wonder and love, can be found in faces of all ages. I branched out from child portraits with "On Top of the World," a portrait of my friend's daughter, Gabi, and her fiancé, Jesse. Then I had the honour of painting my 90 year old neighbor (and my adopted mother), Azucena, holding her great granddaughter. This was followed by a monochrome watercolour of my nephew. Luke, his fiancé, Caitlin and their dachshund, Lola, commissioned as a wedding present for them. As you can see from the images, I continue to do portraits of people both young and old. Marti was a very dear friend who died far too early a few years ago. Her portrait was my gift to her daughter. All of the portraits are done in watercolour from photographs.
